Are you ready for a cute dishcloth and coaster pattern set? The Sedgewick Dishcloth and Coaster Set features two simple crochet patterns using the sedge stitch. This stitch creates a cute, textured fabric that works perfectly for a coaster and dishcloth! These are super quick to make and practical in your home/kitchen, and are a great way to add long lasting, quality products to your home! You can pop them in the washer and dryer and they will last for years!

I used KnitPicks Dishie cotton yarn in the color Silver and let me tell you, this is my new FAVOURITE cotton yarn! I have tried a few different cotton yarns in the past and never been totally happy with them, so I have never really focused much on dishcloths and similar projects. KnitPicks sent me some Dishie to try, and it blew me away! It is really soft and flexible, while still having enough structure, and it doesn't split while working with it!

You can use any weight 4 worsted cotton yarn for these patterns, but I definitely recommend Dishie if you haven't tried it before!

I hope you enjoy these free patterns! If you would like to purchase an ad free PDF copy of the pattern set, it is available on Ravelry, Etsy and my website. Materials

  • 5 mm crochet hook (US H/8)
  • ~15 (coaster) / 45 (dishcloth) yards of worsted weight (4) cotton yarn. Click here for my favorite cotton yarn.
  • Scissors
  • Measuring tool
  • Tapestry needle

Size

These patterns make a coaster that is approx. 4.5 x 4.5 inches (11.5 x 11.5 cm) and a dishcloth that is approx. 7.5 x 7.5 inches (19 x 19 cm). To make a larger/smaller item, cast on more/less stitches in multiples of 3, and alter # of rows to match.

Abbreviations

CH  chain

st(s)  stitch(es)

SC  single crochet stitch

HDC  half double crochet stitch

DC  double crochet stitch

SL ST  slip stitch

RS  right side of work

WS  wrong side of work

Gauge

Note: Gauge is not super important for this design, as the sizing of the finished items does not need to be exact. I recommend using a hook that will get you fairly close to this gauge, but you can also add extra sts/rows to alter the size.

Gauge swatch should be in sedge stitch pattern, and blocked (steam blocked ideally)

 3.75” x 3.75” (9.5 x 9.5 cm) = 15 sts x 11 rows (this is 5 “puffs” wide)

Sedge Stitch

The following stitches are used to create the sedge stitch:

Single Crochet (SC):    Insert hook, yarn over and pull a loop back through, yarn over and pull through both loops   on hook.

Half Double Crochet (HDC):   Yarn over, insert hook, yarn over and pull a loop back through, yarn over and pull through all   three loops on hook.

Double Crochet (DC):   Yarn over, insert hook, yarn over and pull a loop back through, yarn over and pull through first   two loops on hook, yarn over and pull through final two loops on hook.

The sedge stitch is created by doing a SC, HDC and DC all in the same stitch.

Coaster Pattern

Sedge Stitch Center

1.CH 15 (or a multiple of 3 if altering the stitch count/size)

2.In the 2nd CH from the hook, work 1 HDC and 1 DC. Skip 2 CH spaces. *In the next CH work 1 SC, 1 HDC and 1 DC. Skip 2 CH spaces.* Repeat *  * until you have 1 CH left. Work 1 SC in the last CH. You should have 5 sedge stitch “puffs”.

3.Turn your work. CH 1 (counts as the SC of the sedge stitch), work 1 HDC and 1 DC into the top of the last SC from the previous row. *Skip over the HDC and DC spaces from the previous row. Work 1 SC, 1 HDC and 1 DC into the next SC space from the previous row.* Repeat *  * until you have worked into the last SC space from the previous row. Work 1 SC into the initial CH from the previous row.

4.Repeat step 3 until your piece measures the same height as the width. I worked 10 repeats of Step 3.

Border

1.Don’t turn your work. CH 1. *Work 15 SC stitches along the first side edge of the coaster. CH 2 at the corner.* Repeat *  * for each remaining side edge until you are back at the beginning of the border. SL ST into the starting CH.

Note: the top and bottom edges will have clear stitches to work these 15 SC sts into. The side edges won’t have clear spaces to work into so just work into the edges and keep it as evenly spaced as you can!

2.Continue working in the same direction. CH 1. *SC into the 1st SC from the edge of the previous step. (CH 1, skip next st, work 1 SC.) Repeat (  ) until end of the first edge. CH  2.* Repeat *  * for each remaining side edge until you are back at the beginning. SL ST into the starting CH. Cut the yarn, leaving a ~6 inch tail. Hook the tail and pull it through the remaining loop to tie off the end.

3.Weave in ends and block your piece to straighten out the edges and corners!
