The Kal Cardigan is a lovely cardigan design with some half brioche shoulder detailing and half brioche button band. The cardigan is knit top down, starting with the collar, then picking up stitches and working the shoulder and front increases. The piece is then separated into the left and right front sections and the back, which are knit to the bottom of the armholes and then rejoined. The body is knit to desired length with a little bit of shaping, then a ribbed hem. The sleeves are picked up around the armholes, and knit in the round, decreasing down to the ribbed cuff. It is designed to have pockets (optional), which are picked up from the body, knit up and then seamed along the sides. Buttonholes are knit into the button band as you are working the length of the body. The fit of this cardigan is intended to be a loose, boxy fit. It is a size inclusive design, written in sizes to fit the range of 28” - 62” bust (every 4” bust size). The sweater is meant to have 20-30% positive ease, with the finished sweater bust circumference ranging from 35”-76”.

Sizes offered:
36(41, 46, 50, 56)60, 66, 71, 76

To fit an actual bust of:
28-30(32-34, 36-38, 40-42, 44-46)48-50, 52-54, 56-58, 60-62

The sizes reflect the FINISHED bust measurements in inches of the sweater, and listed below the sizes you can see the actual bust range for each size. The sweater is designed for 20-30% inches of positive ease, with the lower end of the bust measurement range giving ~30% positive ease, and the higher end of the bust measurement range giving about 20% positive ease. If you are in between sizes, size down if you prefer a snugger fit, or up if you prefer a looser fit.

Yarn recommended:
Any DK and suri weight yarn held together to match gauge. (DK + suri held together is equal to a worsted weight if you don’t like or can’t wear suri/mohair, or just prefer holding one strand of yarn rather than the two weights together)
My sample is knit using Explorer Knits + Fibers Rockies DK (274 yds/100g) held together with Suri Alpaca (328 yds/50g). I used the colourway Exordium, which is one of Ali’s 2022 solstice tonal colourways! I used the same colourway on both the DK and suri, but you could definitely use two different colours (one tonal and one variegated would be lovely!)

Yardage recommended:
DK: 815(895, 990, 1095, 1215)1340, 1395, 1620, 1735
~and~
Suri: 740(810, 890, 985, 1095)1200, 1250, 1450, 1560

The yardage for the suri is a bit lower than the DK. This is based on the amount I used for my sample (I weighed each skein before and all the remaining yarn after, so it should be pretty accurate), but if you want to be safe you could order the matching yardage to the DK.

If you choose to use a worsted in place of the DK and suri held together, use the DK yardage estimate

Note: Yardage is an approximation and is calculated using the recommended lengths from the pattern. Yardage can vary depending on your gauge and knitting, so I always recommend buying extra in case you require more yardage for adding length, etc.

Needles recommended:
5 mm / US 8 / UK 6 circular needles with a cord length that matches your bust circumference, plus either 16” cord/DPNs/32 or 40” cord for magic loop for the sleeves
Note: You may need other size needles to meet gauge

Gauge:
4” x 4” = 18 sts x 23 rows
1” x 1” = 4.5 sts x 5.75 rows
Gauge should be knit in stockinette, worked flat, and blocked using the same method you plan to use for the actual sweater (ex. steam vs wet).
It might be helpful to also swatch in the round to make sure your gauge isn’t drastically different for the sleeves
Note: If your stitch count is correct for gauge, but row count is not, use this needle size but remember you may need to adjust your length

Extra notions recommended:
Lots of stitch markers! 6 markers minimum for marking the increase spots for the yoke
3 buttons (¾ - 1 ¼ inch diameter would work best)
Scissors
Yarn needle
Scrap yarn, knit keeper cords, or extra interchangeable cords for holding sections of the work
Row counter is recommended!
