The Lallybroch Beanie is a classic folded brim beanie design knit in 2-colour brioche. It could be worn with or without a pom pom, and could be knit to a shorter length if you prefer no brim. It has crown shaping to curve around the top of the head, rather than the pointy/raised crown you see in some beanies. The hat is knit bottom up, in the round, and can be considered reversible (the crown shaping isn’t quite as clean on the wrong side, but still looks quite good if you wanted to wear it reversed). This beanie pattern is offered in 5 different size options (Baby up to Adult Large).

Tech Edited by Nicky Jensen (handknitsandhygge.com)

Sizes offered:
1 - Baby - 12 inches / 30 cm (to fit a 13-16 inch / 32.5-40 cm head circumference)
2 - Toddler - 14 inches / 35 cm (to fit a 15-18 inch / 37.5-45 cm head circumference)
3 - Child/Adult Small - 16 inches / 40 cm (to fit a 18-21 inch / 45-52.5 cm head circumference)
4 - Adult Medium - 18 inches / 45 cm (to fit a 20-23 inch / 47.5-57.5 cm head circumference)
5 - Adult Large - 20 inches / 50 cm (to fit a 22-25 inch / 55-62.5 cm head circumference)

Note: These sizes are given with their approximate head measurement range. Please make sure to base your sizing off of the head circumference measurements, not the age range. The beanie is intended to be worn with around 10-30% negative ease, depending on how snug you like your beanie. My sample was knit in Size 4 - Adult Medium, with about 22% negative ease on a 23” head.

Needles required:
4.5 mm / US 7 / UK 7 - You may be able to work the body of the hat with small circumference circular needles (9-16 inch / 22.5-40 cm), but you will need DPNs or circular needles with approximately 40 inch / 100 cm cord for magic loop for the crown decreases.

Note: You may need other size needles to meet gauge.

Gauge:
In 2-colour brioche, worked in the round, blocked but unstretched:

16 sts x 19 rounds = 4 x 4 “ (10 x 10 cm)

Note: The row count listed in the gauge is for the visible rows of either MC or CC when looking at the respective side of the work. Due to the nature of 2-colour brioche knitting where each row is worked twice (once in each colour), the actual rows worked will be double the listed row count.

Yarn required:
Two colours of DK weight yarn. The Main Colour (MC) will be the dominant colour on the right side, and the Contrast Colour (CC) will be the dominant colour on the wrong side (though the hat is reversible so you can wear it either way).

Sample #1 (green) - Treehouse Knits Dogwood DK (246 yds / 225 m per 100 g, 90% Extra Fine SW Merino Wool, 10% Recycled Nylon) - I’m Only Here For The Food and Schrute Farms

Sample #2 (blue) - Treehouse Knits Dove DK (246 yds / 225 m per 100 g, 100% Fine SW Merino Wool) - River Run and A Hundred Thousand Angels Dancing

Sample #3 (pink) - Treehouse Knits Dove DK (246 yds / 225 m per 100 g, 100% Fine SW Merino Wool) - One Small Word Is Not Enough For Love and Outlander

A great commercial alternative is Knitpicks Swish DK!

Yardage required:
The yardage listed below is required for EACH of your MC and CC strands. The MC will use a couple yards more due to the cast on, but they should be almost equal.

1 - Baby - 57 yds / 52 m per strand
2 - Toddler - 76 yds / 69 m per strand
3 - Child/Adult Small - 98 yds / 90 m per strand
4 - Adult Medium - 117 yds / 107 m per strand
5 - Adult Large - 141 yds / 129 m per strand

Note: Estimates are based on my recommended length and circumference values, and yardage constants calculated based on my samples plus a 5% buffer. Most testers used less than these yardages.
