The Pillars Tank is the next design in the Pillars family! I love the style of my Pillars of SimpliciTee and Faded Pillars Sweater, and I figured it was time for a tank top version! It is knit top down, knit flat in front/back sections, then joined after the arm hole and knit in the round. It has a short section of stockinette for the body and then a long 2 x 2 ribbed hem. I have created 4 neckline options for this tank: 1) lower V w/ high back, 2) higher V w/ high back, 3) lower V on both front and back, and 4) higher V on both front and back. I will include some waist shaping modifications, but it is intended to be a bit more of a straight fit. It is a size inclusive design, written in sizes every 2 inches from 28” - 66” bust. It is intended to fit with 0-10% negative ease.

These sizes reflected the FINISHED bust measurements in inches of the tank. The tank is designed for 0-10% negative ease. To determine the size you wish to knit, measure your bust, and subtract 0-10% of that measurement to find the closest size (ex. My bust is 36” and I want to knit with 5” negative ease. 5% of 36” is 1.8” so I would subtract 1.8” from 36” resulting in 34.2”, so I would knit the 34”). If you are in between sizes, size down for a snugger fit, or up for a looser fit. If you are using a fiber with less stretch (ex. plant based fibers), I recommend knitting a size with more negative ease.
Note 1: If you are fairly busty, you may want to use a higher negative ease, or knit a size based on your upper bust measurement rather than your full bust measurement, this will help prevent the tank being too loose around the rest of your torso.
Note 2: This design is intended to have a lower V-neck depth, but I have provided a higher V-neck option which may be better if you have a small bust and/or don’t like to show too much cleavage.
Needles recommended:
Note: I recommend using a set of interchangeable needles for this pattern, as you will need multiple cord lengths
4.5 mm / US 7 / UK 7
Use a cord length to match your size bust measurement (or slightly smaller)
You may need other size needles to meet gauge.
Gauge (blocked):
Using 4.5 mm needles and working in stockinette in the round.
I recommend also swatching flat, as the first part of the tank is knit flat before joining in the round. If your flat gauge is significantly different than your round gauge, you can adjust needle size for the flat portion.
4” x 4” = 20 sts x 26 rows/rounds
1” x 1” = 5 sts x 6.5 rows/rounds
Make sure to block your swatch, as this can significantly change the size of your swatch depending on your fiber choice. Keep in mind that the weight of the finished tank may add a little extra stretch.
Note: If your stitch count is correct for gauge but row/round count is a bit off, continue using this needle size, but keep in mind you may need to adjust your length by adding rounds.

Any DK (3) weight yarn that you can get gauge with. You could also hold two strands of fingering together in place of a DK yarn.
